Above The Law Essay The flashing lights of the police cars are blinding to you in your inebriated state. Through your drunken haze, the events leading up to now start to unfold. You were pulling ninety miles an hour in your SUV, when you collided with the bus full of blind orphans. The resulting crash sent the bus careening off the overpass, and onto a passing group of nuns and the governor, killing all of them instantly. The total body count is so far unknown. If you were an average person, you could expect the electric chair without question. Of course, youre far from average. Youre a former Olympic champion who stars in the number one rated show in America, and whose movie has won multiple Academy Awards. You are in fact, a celebrity. Youll be free before you have time to get comfortable in a holding cell. You wont even have to serve any real prison time. At most, youll probably have to serve a few hours of community service. Although this moment seems preposterous, as well as obviously impossible, it essentially occurs all the time to a lesser degree. Athletes and other celebrities are almost always assured that they will usually get a slight fine or a few hours of community service at the most, and still get to wear any time served as a badge of honor. Because of their immense wealth, and more importantly, their huge public standing, they tend to receive an unfair advantage in the courts, while someone who performs the same act is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Because most celebrities possess exorbitant amounts of cash, they can purchase the best legal staff that money can buy. These attorneys are an almost assured win for the defense, since they can find all the potential legal loopholes necessary for an acquittal. By purchasing legendary attorneys, they can come up with excellent testimony on their behalf, essentially allowing them to beat the system regardless of their crime. As has proven in past cases, these attorneys can pretty much beat any charge leveled against their client. An average person would regrettably have to either settle with a public defender, or a cheaper attorney, neither of which can give an edge for the defendant. A key example of this was when former heavyweight boxer Riddock Bowe kidnapped his wife and children a few years ago. All the evidence was there to convict him and put him away for a long time, but because he had Johnnie Cochran as an attorney, it was argued that he was punch drunk, thereby giving him probation. The limited capacities excuse is a clear argument for celebrities, along with the stupidity excuse, as was shown in the Pedro Guerrero case last year. Mr. Guerrero was acquitted of drug charges after it was proven that he was too stupid to have done it. Anyone non-famous attempting either of these tricks would be laughed all the way to prison, since kidnapping is a federal offense, and the government prosecutes to the fullest possible extent. Another leading to celebrity superiority is that they are held on such a high pedestal, that the public refuses to believe that whatever allegations leveled are absurd. This has happened for years, with growing intensity. The first man to get away with this was the late Ty Cobb. Cobbs on the field antics were infamous in the world of baseball, but his off the field actions were even worse. He was once fined $150 for beating a black elevator operator for being insolent. He was once suspended for one game after jumping into the stands and beating a heckler to the point where his own mother wouldnt recognize him; so badly in fact, that the man lost three fingers. Another time he nearly slashed off a mans face after an attempted hold-up. No charges were ever leveled. Since Ty Cobb was at the time the biggest name in baseball, he was allowed to walk away with only minor fines. All are still gainfully employed, and are still granted the right to work at their jobs while serving time. Of course, they almost always break the rules of their release within hours, but its okay since theyre famous. When you are famous, no matter what you do, it is okay as long as you remain famous. This is a perfect sign of a disjointed culture in which role models are allowed to continue their lives with no retribution, while a common man would be blacklisted from any employment after release. It should be made to be that the special treatment is gone, making those with true problems have to be confined until it can proven that whatever problem they have is gone. No one has a job that important that they cant be replaced, and this includes the famous. In a day and age in which those who are famous are for all extensive purposes above the law, it makes one wonder when society will say enough. As is the current trend, although most celebrities get off, one will essentially be justly prosecuted. The scales should be balanced out again by removing any potential legal loopholes as a start. Justice should truly be blind, not dumb or easily swayed. It is hopeful that one day the scales of justice will finally be equal, and that the rich and famous will not be the only ones to receive leniency in the courts.

Located on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. it contains many hotel rooms and offices. What happened in the complex on June 17, 1972 early in the morning became a very historical event for our nation that no one will ever forget. The "Watergate Scandal" and constitutional crisis that began on June 17, 1972 with the arrest of five burglars who broke into the Democratic National Committee (DMC) headquarters at the Watergate office building in Washington D.C. It ended with the registration of President Richard M. Nixon on August 9, 1974. (Watergate) At approximately 2:30 in the morning of June 17, 1972 five men were arrested at the Watergate Complex. The police seized a walkie talkie, 40 rolls of unexposed film, two 35 millimeter cameras, lock picks, pensized teargas guns, and bugging devices. (Gold, 75) These five men and two co-plotters were indicated in September 1972 on charges of burglary, conspiracy and wire tapping. Four months later they were convicted and sentenced to prison terms by District Court Judge John J. Sercia was convinced that relevant details had not been unveiled during the trial and offered leniency in exchanged for further information. As it became increasingly evident that the Watergate burglars were tied closely to the Central Intelligence Agency and the Committee to re-elect the president. (Watergate) Four of these men, that were arrested on the morning of June 17, 1972, came from Miami, Florida. They were Bernard L. Barker, Frank A. Sturgis, Virgillio R. Gonzalez, and Eugenio R. Martinez. The other man was from Rockville, Maryland named James W. McCord, Jr. The two co-plotters were G. Gordon Liddy and E. Howard Hunt. (Watergate) The senate established and investigative committee headed by Senate Sam Ervin, Jr., to look into the growing scandal. As they were investigating, they related that the famous break-in was far more involved than what everyone had expected. (Watergate) The White Houses involvement of that morning first became evident when James McCord wrote a letter to Judge Sirca. In this letter McCord explained that he wanted to disclose the details of Watergate. He made it apparent that he would not speak to a Justice department official of an FBI agent. Although his letter did unveil details, it made server chargers. McCord justified that "Political pressure" (Westerfled 36) had generated many defendants to plead guilty and remain silent. He also claimed that there had been whiteness at the trail who had committed perjury in order to protect the people who headed the brake-in. McCord declared that he, his family, and his friend may be in danger if he spoke out. (Westerfled 36-37) The Senate Watergate Committee saw their chance to unravel the mystery of this scandal. The offered James McCord a chance to speak publicly. In his first meeting with representatives of this committee he named two more people that he claimed were involved in the burglary and cover-up. Theses two men were John Dean and Jeb Margruder. Margruder was the second-in-charge of the CRP and Dean was a White House aid. After hearing these substantial accusations the Senate Watergate Committee promptly subpoenaed John Dean and Jeb Margruder. (Westerfled 37-38). After the next session with James McCord he took the whiteness stand and explained how Liddy had promised him an executive pardon if he would plead guilty. This began to question the a White House involvement since only the president could present such a pardon. (Westerfled, 40) Jeb Margruder was the next witness to testify. He admitted his own perjury to the Grand Jury and verified what McCord had said. While on the stand he also revealed another name to add to the list of those involved, John Mitchell. (Gold, 246-247) The next witness scheduled to appear was John Dean. In Dean's testimony he exposed that the Watergate burglary had been only a part of a greater abuse of power. He said that for four years the White House had used the powers of the presidency to attack political enemies. They spied on and harassed anyone who did not agree with Nixon's policies. If a reporter wrote stories criticizing the White House they would be singled out for tax investigations. The White House also kept an "Enemies List" (Westerfled 43) of people that the presidents men wanted revenge on. After being fired, dean kept official documents that supported his statements. Victor Frankenstein Essay He uses imagery to give examples for how he felt, like when he says I crept from my kennel as though he was a disgraced dog, and treated like an animal. At this point, the reader may have changed their views about the creation, but Frankenstein certainly hasnt. He knows about how well spoken the monster is and thinks of it as a trick, to lure people into keeping him company. He says to Robert Walton that the creature is eloquent and persuasive, and once his words had a power over my heart; but trust him not. Frankenstein still believes the creature is to blame. When Walton sees the creature for the first time, he believes what Frankenstein told him on his deathbed. He says I beheld a vision so horrible as his face, of such loathsome yet appalling hideousness. It shows the reader how the monsters appearance somehow overshadows the beauty of its speech. Finally, Shelley uses some archaic language to show the historical context of the book. She uses the word deamon when Frankenstein refers to the monster and this spelling of the word is no longer used. Shelley chose this word to describe the creature because it has connotations of the devil and evil ways. This links in with Shelleys society and religion because everyone was religious and using the word deamon would show just how much hate Frankenstein had for his monster. Frankenstein, by using this particular word for the creature, shows how he feels that he is the innocent one. When the monster speaks, his language is very fluent, smooth and flowing which links in well with the Romantic Movement, which was very much around at the time, the book was written. The structure of the book is very interesting as it starts at the end, then goes back in time to explain the story. This gives the reader a chance to hear Frankensteins side of the story as he tells it to Robert Walton. The first part of the book is written as epistolary. This means it is written as a form of letters put together into a story. First, there are letters from Robert Walton to his sister Margaret. These letters make it clear that he has an obsession, much like Frankensteins, about reaching the North Pole. He then mentions that he has met a stranger, and goes on to inform Margaret of Frankensteins story. We hear Frankensteins story, right up to where he reaches Waltons ship, and then it continues in the form of epistolary. The structure is very interesting, because Walton writes about his own story to Margaret and his story includes Frankensteins story which also includes the creatures story. So Walton who is writing to his sister (and the audience) communicates all three stories in his letters. The narrative structure is very clever, because I think the same end would have happened to Walton if Frankenstein hadnt have come along and informed him of the dangers of obsessions, it would have ruined his life, as the creation of the monster ruined Frankensteins. It was obviously morally wrong of Frankenstein to devote his life to his obsession, where his life was perfect before this fixation with natural philosophy. He shunned his friends, and if he had not done this to create the monster, they would not have all been killed. There are many points where the reader does not know whether he was morally wrong or not, and the best example of this is when he decides to make the creature. It would have been morally wrong to unnaturally create life in the 19th century, but there is more leeway today as there are so many different views on genetic engineering. Taken as a whole, I think that Victor Frankenstein was morally reprehensible. Even in the 21st century, where the creation of life is more frequent, I think it was morally wrong to take body parts from dead people. I think he should have realised the terrible consequences of his actions before he went ahead with the creation. He did so much research into natural philosophy and he should have realised from his study that he needed to learn from other peoples experiences. His obsession with being the first got in the way of him thinking straight. I think Frankenstein leaving the monster to fend for himself was also morally wrong. All human beings are cared for once they are born, so leaving the monster alone is suggesting that he isnt human and doesnt deserve to be treated as one. As the creature was often out in the open, this gave him a chance to be shunned and discriminated against by society which introduced the feelings of hatred and aggression which were used later on to destroy Frankensteins happiness. Frankenstein is really responsible, because if he were not so obsessed with natural philosophy and the death of his mother, he would never have developed a passion for saving life and would never have discovered that creating life was possible. He only had himself to blame for the destruction caused by the creature; not only to himself but to those he loved. Frankenstein never really admitted the responsibility, he said that God gave him the power, I found such astonishing power placed upon my hands, I hesitated a long time concerning the manner in which I should employ it and though he did take a long time to think about what to do, he reached never realised the full outcome of his decision. Although he realised his mistake at the end, and tried to put someone off making the same one, he never admitted the responsibility out loud. So, in conclusion to the title, Id say that Victor Frankenstein is a very morally reprehensible character.
